Based on the ground floor of Noarlunga’s Colonnades Shopping Centre, Can:Do South will deliver a range of services to support health and wellbeing, and provide employment and social inclusion opportunities.
Offering more than just standard therapy, Can:Do South will see each client holistically, with programs designed to encourage social connection, develop skills for independent living and build confidence and vocational skills. Can:Do South will also provide families a safe space for the whole family to feel supported.
With hearing loss now effecting 3.6 million people and the prevalence of sensory impairments rising, Can:Do South is a much needed service for the Adelaide’s southern suburbs.
Council agreed at this week’s meeting to become a community partner with Can:Do South, contributing $50,000 to the new hub over the next five years.
Council’s contribution will be put to good use with creation of a Barista Breakout Area. This space will give young adults with a disability the opportunity to learn barista skills, which will enhance employability, help combat unemployment and promote social inclusion.
Statistics show that for people living with a disability, participation in the workforce is much lower than for people without a disability (53 per cent compared with 84 per cent). This statistic highlights the need to support training and skill development that leads to employment.
As part of the community partnership, council will also work with Can:Do South to make the City of Onkaparinga Christmas Pageant more accessible, and as a consultation resource in the development of council’s new Disability Access and Inclusion Plan.
Partnering with Can:Do South also aligns with council’s Community Plan 2030 objective of connected, engaged and resilient communities.
