Finding gold

Join the Garage Sale Trail and improve the health of your wallet and the environment.

During the weeks and months of staying safe at home during the coronavirus pandemic, many people took to decluttering their cupboards and sheds to make their space more comfortable. If you’re wondering what to do with all of that stuff now, register for the Garage Sale Trail on the weekend of 21 and 22 November.

Garage Sale Trail promotes re-use and recycling using a national community focus to turn suburban streets into a buzzing marketplace.
The initiative raises awareness of consumption habits.

From its beginnings in 2010 with 130 garage sales, Garage Sale Trail has grown to be supported by more than 140 councils nationally including the City of Onkaparinga. More than 400,000 Australians participate in some 16,000 garage sales with an estimated three million secondhand items on offer. Each year, sales from the event saves 3.5 million kilograms of stuff from going to landfill.

On average, household sellers make more than $300 from selling unwanted items such as clothing, books, music, games, toys and homewares.

Last year, 4693 Onkaparinga residents got involved in the Garage Sale Trail as sellers or shoppers across 244 registered sales and stalls. More than 34,000kg of items were reused in the local area, 31 per cent of which would have otherwise gone to landfill.

Pre-registrations to host or join a sale or take part as a shopper are open now at garagesaletrail.com.au. Sellers get their own sale listing or webpage, plus free supporting materials and social media templates to use to promote their sale.

“This year’s event is hoped to operate the same way as previous years with in-person garage sales, but with great importance placed on protecting the health of the community with attention to distancing and hygiene practices,” says council’s Waste and Recycling Education Officer Lynda Wedding.

There will be a significant online element to the weekend, including the option to host a virtual garage sale.

Onkaparinga residents will also have the opportunity to participate in a series of online workshops focussing on mending, reducing waste, and reusing and repurposing items.
