Fun with friends

Adults with disabilities are enjoying the social activities on offer as part of the City of Onkaparinga’s Disability Program.

The council’s Disability Program is providing people aged 18 to 65 with a unique opportunity to participate in group-based social and recreational activities.

The Disability Program offers fortnightly daytime outings, evening outings, monthly dinner clubs, a walking group, an aqua movement class, a shed activity and the Shedtastics singing group.

Group members are involved with the planning of the programs so the activities can be tailored to suit their interests.

“Feedback about the program is gathered from our group members at planning days, through surveys, and informally at our activities,” says Senior Disability Coordinator Marie Nicholls. “We aim to help participants build personal and community networks in a fun and relaxed atmosphere, while developing their skills along the way.”

Long-time member of the Disability Program, Lee McEgan, says he looks forward to getting together with his friends.

“They’re a friendly bunch of people. I like them all a lot,” Lee says. “We’ve been out to lunches, and we’ve visited the Haigh’s Chocolates factory, Port Elliot, Monarto Zoo and the Botanic Gardens. We see drama performances, and we join in with cooking lessons.”

The Onkaparinga community bus collects Lee and his friends from their homes. Lee’s mother, Liz McEgan, says the program enables him to visit locations that would otherwise be difficult to navigate in his wheelchair without the support of a carer.

“The group-based format of the council’s Disability Program is unique in the southern area. I’m so thankful for the opportunities the program creates for Lee to meet people and socialise,” Liz says.

The fun enjoyed at the various outings are a credit to the coordinators, say Lee and Liz.

“The coordinators are a cool bunch. They’re a laugh and a half, and so welcoming,” Lee says.

The council is registered as a NDIS provider. Disability Program participants need to be independent in their personal care, medication administration and, if required, specialised meal-time management. New members are invited to enquire about joining the Disability Program on a casual basis.
