Have your say on Old Reynella murals

City of Onkaparinga is proposing two new murals for Old Reynella and it wants your feedback by this Sunday 9 May.

The two buildings that have been identified for a mural are:

  • The northern wall of the Model Railroaders shed on the eastern side of Old South Road
  • The besser brick building at 155 Old South Road (specifically the besser brick wall at the building’s southern end).

It’s likely the Model Railroaders building will have a mural that reflects the railway’s history and will be in keeping with the function and ongoing interest in all things locomotive.

Council is seeking the community’s feedback on what the mural could look like for the besser brick wall to inform the development of the public art project brief, and you can have your say at City of Onkaparinga’s Your Say page until Sunday 9 May.

Old Reynella is a town that proudly celebrates its history, and it was one of the first wine and farming communities south of Adelaide.

Over the past 25 years council has undertaken projects that provide artistic interpretations of the town’s history to enhance and beautify the area.

Previous streetscape work has focused on the section of Old South Road north of Grant Road, with council now proposing to enhance Old South Road’s southern end.

Businesses at the southern end are keen to see the area enhanced with murals that will integrate them into the rest of the Old Reynella township.

Next steps

Once the Your Say engagement has closed, an open call will be distributed via council’s website and networks with a public art project brief.

Artists will provide an expression of interest, and the Onkaparinga Public Art Reference Team will choose up to three expressions of interest to move to the shortlist, concept development phase.

The reference team will be made up of key stakeholders, an elected member, artists and members of council’s arts team.

The Public Art Project Assessment Panel, made up of key council staff and artists, will assess the concepts presented by the shortlist and award the final design.

It’s anticipated the murals will be undertaken by the awarded artist/artist team in the second half of 2021.
