Home-grown success settles in Onkaparinga

Culture-driven and family managed since 1963, EC Carpets is setting the stage for future growth down south.

Business in the City of Onkaparinga is looking better than ever with local industry stalwart, EC Carpets, establishing its new state-of-the-art manufacturing facility¬–the most advanced of its kind in the southern hemisphere–in the heart of Lonsdale.

Marking a significant milestone in the company’s 60 year journey, and symbolising a new chapter for local manufacturing, the large project sees four previously separate sites, including their original Edwardstown headquarters, amalgamated into one innovative complex.

Following several years of meticulous planning, and a nation-wide search for the perfect home base, the company's choice to remain local not only reaffirms a deep commitment to their South Australian heritage, but also steadfast loyalty to 100-plus staff, the majority of whom reside south of Adelaide.

Passionate about producing quality, Australian-made carpet, the decision to settle within the City of Onkaparinga was emphasised by EC Carpets’ directors.

"The consolidation of our operations under one roof is not just an expansion; it's a transformation,” they said.

"It’s a testament to our commitment to progress, innovation and our local roots. We scoured many sites, including interstate, but wanted a location that embraced our vision, our passion, and we found it in the City of Onkaparinga. We felt most at home here.”

So when the opportunity came along to secure the Meyer Road site they now occupy, EC Carpets took it.

“The enjoyment of carpet lies in its quality, variety and the unique tactile experience it provides, so settling somewhere that similarly reflects this beauty, flanked by world-class wine country and the stunning coast, felt like the perfect fit."

This extensive upgrade strengthens both EC Carpets’ capability for long-term growth and their ability to compete on an international stage.

"Carpet is more than just a product for us, it's something that enhances people’s lives. This facility will allow us to create, innovate and inspire for decades to come.”

But the move further south didn't just happen by chance.

In addition to EC Carpets’ dedicated effort, the City of Onkaparinga played a pivotal role in supporting the business throughout its transition — from initial conversations regarding the opportunity, to facilitating approvals.

And despite a challenging economic landscape, EC Carpets’ journey is just one shining example among many successful ventures now flourishing in the region.

In fact, the region has witnessed a steady influx of investment across diverse industries in recent years, from tourism and construction to hospitality, supply chain and allied health — affirming its reputation as a fertile ground for businesses to thrive.

Glenn Hickling, Business Growth and Investment Officer for the City of Onkaparinga explains why.

"Our city offers a unique blend of strong population growth, excellent facilities and exceptional community support. Its strong investment attributes, combined with the council’s Economic Growth and Tourism team building strong relationships with businesses, has seen new investment like EC Carpets realised."

With over 10,000 registered businesses now operating in the region, and total building approvals set for another robust year, it's clear that the City of Onkaparinga is becoming a strategic hub for business expansion.

“While there are currently low vacancy rates amongst commercial and industrial sites within Lonsdale—showing the trust that businesses place in our region—there’s also other opportunities available,” says Glenn.

“EC Carpets’ move here is evidence of the potential that our city holds, and we're thrilled to have them contributing so positively to our vibrant business landscape.

"Council’s role is to ensure we continue to support the growth and success of all local businesses through our Business Onkaparinga suite of programs, which help those that choose to invest in our area, prosper."
