Pride Month kicks off next week (1–30 June) and you can get crafty or watch Jimpa, a moving, multi-generational film at Onkaparinga’s libraries to celebrate.
Pride Month offers a time to celebrate LGBTQIA+ communities and honour their resilience, with events held across the world to foster inclusivity, promote understanding and celebrate the diversity of sexual orientations and gender identities.
At Onkaparinga libraries, there are 2 events where you can get crafty, with a $5 cost for materials. Everyone is welcome – whether you identify as LGBTQIA+ or are an ally – but bookings are essential.
Noarlunga Library is hosting a session to create rainbow wreaths (suitable for ages 15+) using yarn tassels to take home on Wednesday 10 June (10am to 12pm).
At Woodcroft Library, you can get crafty with air dry clay and acrylic paint on Wednesday 24 June (10am to 12pm).
You could make propagation pots for succulent babies, pots, plates, pinch pots, jewellery, bowls, mini succulent planters or anything else you can imagine using 250 grams of white modelling clay. Gloves are also provided. Suitable for adults – beginner-friendly, all welcome.
Noarlunga Library is also hosting a free community film screening of Jimpa, a moving, multi-generational film starring Olivia Colman, John Lithgow and Aud Mason-Hyde, and directed by Sophie Hyde, on Friday 12 June (1:30–3:30pm). Part of the movie was filmed in Adelaide.
Funny, accessible, full of sadness and joy, and with a wonderful multigenerational cast, Jimpa brings a queer family to life on screen, taking a nuanced look at just how much has changed in terms of social expectation and our understanding of family across 3 generations.
After the film screening, you’re welcome to enjoy afternoon tea and a chat about the film with other attendees. The film is rated MA15+ and is suitable for adults. Bookings preferred. The film begins at 1:30pm sharp, so arrive from 1pm.
If you’re aged 12–17, Aldinga’s Studio 20 Youth Centre has its free regular monthly Spark event for LGBTQIA+ young people during Pride Month on Monday 1 June (4–5:30pm), this one being hosted at the McLaren Vale and Fleurieu Coast Visitor Information Centre.
Participants can decorate their own cupcakes to take home in a relaxed and welcoming environment, and enjoy a hot chocolate while they chat, unwind and connect with others throughout the session. Book online.
