Revved up for more classics

Classic motoring enthusiasts are in for a spectacle next year when, for the first time in its 14-year history, the McLaren Vale Vintage and Classic will include motorcycles.

The 2019 event – to be held on Sunday 7 April – is expected to attract a record-breaking 600 entrants from across Australia, including more than 100 vintage and classic motorcycles.

The convoy of cars and bikes dating from 1920s to 1980s and a few modern classics will cruise down the Main Street of McLaren Vale from 11am before proceeding to participating wineries where people can see the classics up close.

“Fourteen years ago this event started out as a parade of just 50 cars down the main street,” said event organiser Trevor Sharp.

“Who would have thought in 2019 we’d be looking at more than 600 entries, including motorcycles in the mix.

“We’re also asking entrants to get their gladrags on and dress up in the styles of the era of their vehicle for a chance to win some great prizes.

“We couldn’t be more revved up to host this event and celebrate with locals and visitors a cavalcade of beautiful and astonishingly well cared-for vehicles, fantastic local wine and hospitality, and of course our beautiful part of South Australia.”

The free event has been sponsored by the City of Onkaparinga for five years with Mayor Erin Thompson saying it’s a favourite of people of all ages.

“The McLaren Vale Vintage and Classic is a fun day out for the entire family, and a wonderful opportunity for car enthusiasts to show off their pride and joy while meeting with other likeminded community members,” Mayor Thompson said.

All funds raised through parade registrations go to the McLaren Vale and District War Memorial Hospital and the CFS brigades of McLaren Vale and McLaren Flat.
