Vaulting into a new era of gymnastics

After months of planning and construction, the highly anticipated $5.45 million redevelopment of the Paul Murray Recreation Centre is complete.

The council-owned facility – located on Candy Road in Happy Valley – promises to strengthen the city’s recreational infrastructure and support booming participation in gymnastics in the south.

The versatile space is leased long-term by Hub Gymnastics and used by various community groups, including the 50s Plus Activity Group.

The redevelopment saw the space nearly double in size to 2000sqm with upgrades to the main gymnastics hall and multi-purpose community room. The centre’s facilities including the foyer, kitchen, reception, and bathrooms were also revamped, new mezzanine-level spectator seating was installed, and the carpark was extended.

Head Coach of Hub Gymnastics, Emma Murray, said the redevelopment fosters growth for the club and the wider community, supports improved athletic development, and is creating new employment opportunities.

“Gymnastics continues to thrive, and prior to the redevelopment, we had 300 children on the waitlist at any given time, trying to find a spot,” Emma said.

“The expansion helps alleviate that pressure, while allowing us to offer more programs, and grow current ones.

“We’ve expanded programs like KinderGym and introduced birthday parties, and plans are underway for adult classes, social events, Team Gym, and hosting competitions, which will draw in visitors and support local businesses.

“The new equipment we’ve installed, such as the foam pits and the trampolines, enable our athletes to safely do skills they couldn't do before and it’s helping their confidence grow.

“Our men's program now has access to all the equipment that they compete on which has been a game changer.”

Funding of the redevelopment comprised all levels of government, following the advocacy efforts of Hub Gymnastics. This included the state government’s Office for Recreation, Sport and Racing committing $3 million, the Australian Government providing $443,000 from the Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program and $1 million from the Investing in our Communities Program, and the council contributing $1.011 million.

City of Onkaparinga Mayor Moira Were said the centre upgrade is a sign of a club, families and all levels of government working together.

“The improvements to this asset will be for southern gymnasts, those travelling here to compete, and for those who’ll use the new KinderGym and 50s Plus Activity Group,” Mayor Were said.

“The premier multi-generational facility will meet booming participation in gymnastics in the south while strengthening the pathways for young athletes to realise their dreams.

“It’s incredibly important for us to maintain and invest in assets such as this as they facilitate stronger community connections through increased social inclusion and improved lifelong physical and mental wellbeing.”

The Paul Murray Recreation Centre was officially opened by Emma, with the Premier, government representatives, council staff and members of Hub Gymnastics, on 21 June.

Federal member for Kingston Amanda Rishworth who attended the opening said the Australian Government is proud to have contributed to the transformation.

“These vital upgrades will mean more young people will be able to pursue gymnastics for the first time and those pursuing competitive gymnastics have a quality training facility,” Minister Rishworth said.

Strong advocate for the upgrade, Member for Davenport Erin Thompson, said the state-of-the-art gymnastics facility will give hundreds more local kids the chance to get active and thrive.

“This was a key election commitment of mine, and I’m proud to see it delivered for our community,” she said.

“This isn’t just an investment in bricks and mortar – it’s an investment in our kids’ health, confidence and future.”

Minister for Recreation, Sport and Racing Emily Bourke added: “Our government recognises the growth of gymnastics and is delivering projects that help meet demand on the sport’s facilities and enable athletes to participate.”

For Emma, the new facility holds special significance on a personal level.

“This upgrade means so much to our members and to me,” she said.

“It’s a testament to the incredible work our team has done over the years, and it’s also a fitting tribute to my late father, Paul Murray OAM.”

“This facility is everything he would have dreamed of for our members and families. It is a legacy he left behind, and we are proud to carry it forward.”

“I would like to highlight Councillor Marion Themeliotis as being the driving force for advocating for us and women in sport. She is an absolute powerhouse in how she supports women in sport and leadership roles.”
