Vigil remembers victims of domestic violence

To coincide with Domestic Violence Remembrance Day on Wednesday 4 May, a candlelight vigil was held at Christies Beach.

As part of Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Month, the first Wednesday in May is an occasion to raise awareness of the impacts of violence and the support available to those affected.

This year Embolden, an alliance for women’s freedom, equity and respect worked with their event partners Spirit of Woman, to stage the vigil. The Place of Courage – Ripple – commemorative public artwork located in Rotary Park provided the backdrop for the community to take part in the inclusive and accessible event by lighting a candle and listening to real life experiences.

Guest speakers included Voices for Change SA lived experience advocates, Heather Oxenham, Helen Oxenham OAM, and The Honourable Katrine Hildyard MP — Minister for Child Protection; Minister for Women and the Prevention of Domestic and Family Violence; Minister for Recreation, Sport and Racing.

City of Onkaparinga Acting Mayor Simon McMahon, who attended the event, was honoured that The Place of Courage site was chosen for this healing occasion.

The Place of Courage – Ripple was created as a place for survivors, families and communities affected by domestic and family violence to grieve, find solace and heal,” Acting Mayor McMahon said.

This important event has provided all those who attended with the opportunity to gather and listen to the voices of lived experience as we remembered and honoured those whose lives have been lost.”

The Vigil was followed by a BBQ provided by the Rotary Club of Morphett Vale.
