Creating a new suburb, South Beach
Published on 26 October 2026
The state government's Department for Housing and Urban Development (DHUD) is seeking community feedback on a proposal to realign a portion of Lonsdale's existing suburb boundary and establish a new suburb to be known as South Beach.
The proposed suburb would encompass the former Port Stanvac refinery site within the City of Onkaparinga. The proposal is being considered under the Geographical Names Act 1991 and is subject to a statutory one-month public consultation period.
Community feedback will help inform the minister's decision on the proposed suburb boundary change and new suburb name. All submissions received during the consultation period will be considered before a final decision is made.
The City of Onkaparinga is helping to promote the consultation so local communities are aware of the proposal and have an opportunity to provide feedback. Council will formalise its position on the proposal at the November Council meeting, and then provide a submission to the state government.
Engagement closes Monday 23 November. Head to the state government's yourSAy website to have your say.
The former Port Stanvac refinery site is planned to become a new 230-hectare master-planned mixed-use community comprising approximately 3,600 dwellings, employment land, public open space, community facilities and transport connections.
The above community consultation relates only to the proposed suburb naming and boundary realignment.
