Musicians, artists and creatives will explore the connection between creativity and mental wellbeing at a free panel at Old Reynella’s Base 10 Youth Centre on World Mental Health Day (Thursday 10 October).
The Creative + Wellbeing event – led by former The Living End drummer and City of Onkaparinga Youth Programs Officer, Travis Demsey – will explore the unique challenges artists can face with staying creative and healthy in an increasingly demanding landscape.
Guests include Naomi Keyte (musician and yoga teacher), Paul Bartlett (musician and photographer), Jess Luxx (singer and songwriter), Ella Germein (singer and artist) and Kultar Ahluwalia (hip hop MC and producer).
These artists will discuss the role creativity plays in their lives, and how they use art and music to express themselves and overcome the life challenges they face.
Tickets for the 6pm to 8pm all-ages seminar are free, but spots are limited. Visit Eventbrite to register.
Travis Demsey knows too well the importance of maintaining your mental health while pursuing a creative life, having toured the world with one of Australia’s biggest rock bands.
“When you start making your art, you are generally focused on the doing, which is the intrinsic reason why we make art,” he said.
“Turning that into a profession entails having all sorts of challenges like long hours, financial burdens and pressure on relationships.
“That’s why I’m excited to launch an event on World Mental Health day and hear from this diverse panel of creatives, and find out what lessons they have for navigating these challenges.
“If you’re a creative that wants to hear a candid discussion about these important issues from a group of passionate working artists, I encourage you to come along.”
The Creatives + Wellbeing is presented by Onkaparinga Youth and the Regen Series.
