With the current cost-of-living crisis affecting everyone’s weekly shopping budget, City of Onkaparinga, in collaboration with local services and community groups, is trialling a Pop-up Social Supermarket to help ease the pain.
On Saturday 19 November from 11am to 2pm you can purchase a range of low-cost fresh food and grocery items at Reynella Neighbourhood Centre in Old Reynella.
Find something savvy from a range of clothing on offer, and share a coffee and a snack with family and friends at the centre’s café.
There will be free activities for the kids and a lucky door prize. You can learn more about growing your own fresh produce and how to cook it with free gardening and cooking demonstrations.
A range of community organisations will be on hand to provide information about free services, sporting programs, events and library activities available to local residents.
City of Onkaparinga Healthy Lifestyles Officer Linda Enright explained how the Pop-up Social Supermarket concept evolved.
“Council hosted a workshop in May 2022 to discuss what a pop-up model could look like in Onkaparinga, identify which organisations could participate and what they could contribute to ensure the trial event would be successful,” said Linda.
“With 20 community groups attending the workshop and making a commitment to contribute low-cost food, clothing and community services opportunities, the trial Pop-up Social Supermarket at Reynella Community Centre was given the green light.
“Council has partnered with Anglicare SA, Uniting Communities, ADRA Morphett Vale Community Pantry, Christies Beach Uniting Church, People’s Platter, Foodbank, Hackham West Community Centre, Reynella Neighbourhood Centre, Green Adelaide, and Community Health Onkaparinga – Food4Futures to provide this affordable shopping opportunity.
“Council is committed to creating healthy communities and our first Pop-up Social Supermarket is open to everyone.”
Reynella Neighbourhood Centre is located at 164-170 Old South Road, Old Reynella. Many stalls can take cash payments only with limited EFTPOS facilities available. Please don’t forget your shopping bags.
