Going for gold
The Paris 2024 Olympics (26 July to 11 August) are just days away, with the Paralympics (28 August to 8 September) coming hot on its heels.
To celebrate, we’ve put together this list of Onkaparinga athletes that’ll be competing so you can cheer them on!
Anu Francis
The City of Onkaparinga’s 2024 Sportsperson of the Year, Anu Francis, will don the green and gold for Australia in the para triathlon at the Paralympics.
The Flinders University exercise physiology student’s para-sport journey began in 2017 when she was diagnosed with Ehlers Danlos Syndrome, a degenerative connective tissue disorder.
After representing Australia for badminton and South Australia for rowing, Anu fell in love with triathlon, and has already won a world championships medal and been ranked second in the world ahead of her first Paralympics.
Angus Hincksman
Maslin Beach 18-year-old middle-distance runner Angus Hincksman will represent Australia in the T38 1500m at the Paralympics – an inspirational journey for someone whose family was told he may never walk.
Angus was diagnosed with cerebral palsy after a brain injury at birth, but the sports-loving former Tatachilla Lutheran College student and Southern Athletic Club member's determination and hard work has already seen him win a bronze medal for Australia at last year’s World Para Athletics Championships ahead of the biggest race of his life at the Paralympics.
Joe Ingles
Much-loved Boomers and NBA basketballer, Joe Ingles – who grew up in Happy Valley and played for the Southern Tigers – will again suit up for the Boomers in his fifth Olympic Games.
Ingles’ lengthy NBA career has included stints with the Utah Jazz (where he’s the all-time leader in three-pointers), Milwaukee Bucks, Orlando Magic and Minnesota Timberwolves, and he was part of Boomers team that won Australia’s first men’s Olympics basketball medal (bronze) in Tokyo in 2020. Here’s hoping the team can podium again in Paris.
Jack Rossiter
Reynella Smallbore and Air Rifle Club member, Jack Rossiter, will represent Australia in his third Olympics in Paris, having made his Olympic debut at the Rio 2016 Games when he was 19.
The rifle shooter and former Woodcroft College student has already won multiple world cup event medals, and early this year set an Australian record in the 10m air rifle at the Sydney International Shooting Centre. Will we see Jack add an Olympic medal to his collection?
Kurtis Marschall
Another Woodcroft College alumni, pole vaulter Kurtis Marschall, is representing Australia at his third Olympics in Paris.
The former Reynella East and District Little Athletics Centre member has won two Commonwealth Games gold medals (2018 and 2022) and last year won the bronze medal the World Championships in Budapest, Hungary.
Onkaparinga Now congratulates our local sporting heroes for their amazing journeys to Paris and thanks them for inspiring the community and other up-and-coming local athletes! Know another local Olympian or Paralympian that we’ve missed? Drop us a line at onow@onkaparinga.sa.gov.au
