Have your say on proposed activation sites

City of Onkaparinga’s popular activation program has been expanded, with five new sites proposed to join existing locations, and new grants of up to $5000 to encourage winter activations.

Building on the success of the annual Onkaparinga Summer program, which delivers an array of summer activities, pop-ups and events on council-owned sites along the coastline, the expanded program aims to deliver a program of year-round activities for all ages.

Five new council-owned sites have been proposed to join the existing lineup of Christies Beach Promenade; Rotary Park, Christies Beach; Port Noarlunga Promenade; Port Noarlunga Beach; and Norman Road Aldinga, and you can provide feedback on four of the proposed sites at council’s Your Say page until Monday 19 September. The new proposed sites are:

Interested parties are invited to submit expressions of interest to host activations at these sites by Monday 19 September.

The fifth new proposed site is the open ‘green’ space at the rear of the McLaren Vale and Fleurieu Coast Visitor Centre.

Previous operators The Sandbar, Twilight Markets, Cabana Club, Cabana Beach and Pizzateca Beach will all be offered first right of return at their existing sites, with an expression of interest undertaken to fill any site vacancies if required.

A new winter activation grant of up to $5000 has also been developed to encourage precinct-based collaborations between businesses, associations and creative producers on private land. The grants aim to renew and transform the region’s main streets and tourism precincts, and will be launched early 2023 separate to the annual grant program.

‘Winter villages’ and ‘after dark’ collaborations between nearby local businesses are encouraged to activate and enliven the area. These collaborations will be designed to attract visitors and activate businesses, public places and vacant retail and commercial space during winter (from 1 June to 31 August 2023).

Council is currently seeking activation opportunities aligned to the following themes (though not limited to) for the upcoming summer period (1 December 2022 to 28 February 2023):

  • Summer Foreshore and Coastal (outdoor licenced bars /dining experiences capitalising on coastal locations)
  • Adventure (flyboarding, jet ski tours/hire, fishing charters, kayaking, snorkelling, eco tours, wellness, skydiving, hot air ballooning, e-bikes)
  • Lifestyle and Culture (arts, markets, music, dance, technology, cultural, heritage)

Activations are best described as temporary, short-term commercial activities run over multiple days or a period of time.

They contribute to place-making and place management, spur new and creative ways to stimulate the local economy, and attract visitation.

Activations showcase local offerings, promote Onkaparinga as a vibrant destination, connect people and places, build local business capacity, capabilities and collaboration, create seasonal jobs, and so much more.
