The City of Onkaparinga wants your feedback on a proposed memorial mural to honour the late surfer, Khai Cowley, on the Esplanade at Seaford.
Khai, a much-loved 15-year-old local surfer, tragically passed away following a shark attack on the Yorke Peninsula in December 2023 while on holidays with his family.
The proposal, by Khai's family and friends, would see a memorial mural painted on the east-facing wall of the Seaford amenities block opposite Seaford Road. There is currently a mural painted by artist Paul Alexander on this wall, which is 10 years old and reaching its end of life. The proposal for this new mural will replace the existing artwork.
The City of Onkaparinga did previously engage with the community in June 2024 for a mural proposal on the west facing wall, however the council then received new information from Khai’s family about this project at that time. Following discussions with Khai’s family, council is now proposing to put this work on the east wall facing the Esplanade, which is more prominent and visible to the public.
Because the previous consultation last month related to the mural going on the west wall, the council needs to seek community feedback again. Anyone who participated in that engagement is encouraged to have their say on the updated proposal on the east wall. The council apologises for this incovenience.
Local artist Mike Sander has offered his labour and materials for free as a gesture to support the family and community in remembering Khai.
The proposal includes a mural of Khai surfing a wave, alongside a large portrait, plus a plaque which honours all surfers, alongside Khai – see the indicative concept pictured. It is proposed the artwork will include Khai giving the 'shaka' hand gesture, which is popular in surf culture.
The consultation is open via the council's Your Say page from 11 July to 4 August, and the feedback provided will be collated and included in a report to decision-makers on whether the project will go ahead.
