Homes for Tomorrow

Published on 20 January 2025

A brand-new resource has been launched for people looking to make their homes more sustainable, healthy, climate-resilient and cheaper to run.

The Homes for Tomorrow website offers clear, relatable and actionable information to empower people to embrace sustainability in home builds and renovations.

Launched by the Onkaparinga, Mount Barker, Alexandrina and Light councils, the website provides a range of video case studies, downloadable fact sheets, checklists, resources links and inspirational stories to help make sustainable choices easier.

City of Onkaparinga Mayor Moira Were says there are plenty of free and affordable ways that people can start their sustainable home journeys, beginning with the website’s no-cost and low-cost checklist.

“Building or renovating can feel overwhelming, which is why we’re providing tips and inspiration from people who have done it before and fact sheets about topics such as going electric, upscaling your insulation, window glazing and changing your roof colour,” says Moira.

“The benefits of going sustainable are huge, not just the savings on energy bills through lower heating and cooling costs, but also improved health outcomes, greater comfort and increasing property values.

“And that’s before we start talking about the benefits for the planet when we reduce the environmental impacts of our housing.

“Whether you’re building your dream home, just entering the property market or simply want to make more sustainable choices in your existing home, I encourage you to visit the Homes for Tomorrow website and start your journey today.”

Are you already a sustainable home enthusiast?

The City of Onkaparinga is looking for a local person, couple or family who is already on the sustainable home journey and who can inspire others with their story.

If that’s you, the council would like to hear from you, whatever stage you’re at with building or renovating – land purchase, design and approvals, construction, or moved in within the past nine months.

And it wants to hear about a range of projects, from making the most of winter sun and summer shading to going all-electric, choosing your site orientation or opting for enhanced insulation or recycled materials.

Your build doesn’t need to be a ‘grand design’. The council wants to appeal to a broad audience and demonstrate that a sustainable home is well within reach in Onkaparinga

To showcase your passion for sustainable living, you’ll take part in a video interview to tell your story and offer practical, budget-friendly tips on creating a sustainable home. The video will be shared on the Homes for Tomorrow website and the council’s social media pages.

Expressions of interest can be submitted using the online EOI form.
