Nominations open for Reconciliation Week awards

Published on 24 April 2026

Nominations for the Mayor’s Reconciliation Week Recognition Awards are open online until Sunday 17 May.

The awards recognise individuals, groups, community organisations and businesses that have made a significant contribution to reconciliation across the community – in whatever way and whatever area of endeavour.

“We know there are great examples of reconciliation across our community, and we are keen to see as many nominations as possible,” said Onkaparinga Mayor Moira Were.

“We established the Reconciliation Week awards in 2023 in the knowledge that reconciliation is an important issue facing our community.

“Reconciliation is about strengthening relationships between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and non-Indigenous peoples, for the benefit of all Australians.

“It’s about those everyday acts of bringing people together, sharing culture and building relationships, as much as it is about the big events, maybe even more so.

“These awards recognise those sometimes small, and often invisible, acts as well as the more public and formal activities of reconciliation.”

The Mayor’s Reconciliation Week Recognition Awards coincide with National Reconciliation Week, which is held every year from 27 May to 3 June.

The week is a time for all Australians to learn about their shared histories, cultures and achievements and explore how they can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia.

This year’s theme of ‘All In’ is a call for every Australian to commit wholeheartedly to reconciliation, to not stand on the sidelines but to get into the action to make change.

Winners of the awards will be announced at an event on Wednesday 3 June during National Reconciliation Week.

Nominations for the awards are open online until 17 May on the council’s website: onkaparingacity.com/reconciliation.
