Meet Boori Monty Pryor

Published on 16 August 2022

Multi-award-winning children’s author, didgeridoo player, storyteller, dancer and renowned public speaker, Boori Monty Pryor, will discuss his latest book, Story Doctors, and tell traditional stories at an online author talk on Thursday 25 August.

Presented by Onkaparinga Libraries and held during Children’s Book Council of Australia (CBCA) Book Week, the free author talk (2–2:45pm) can be viewed from home or enjoyed by live stream at Aldinga and Woodcroft libraries. The event is suitable for all ages and bookings are essential.

Boori’s father was from the Juru people of the Bowen region and his mother is a descendant of the Kungganji nation near Carins.

He has collaborated with Meme McDonald on five books: Maybe Tomorrow (1998), My Girragundji (1998), The Binna Binna Man (1999), Nunjul The Sun (2002) and Flytrap (2002), and he was named the inaugural Australian Children’s Laureate in 2012, together with Alison Lester.

His latest book Story Doctors (2021) was illustrated by Rita Sinclair and in it Boori invites you to travel with him from the first footsteps, through 80,000+ years of strength, sickness, and immense possibility.

From the very first stories and art, to dance, language, and connection with the land, Boori offers a powerful, beautiful, and deeply rich account of Australia's true history, drawing on a lifetime of wisdom, and on his generous instinct to teach and heal.

An exquisitely illustrated celebration of the power of storytelling to unite us, how nature connects us, and the wonderful truth that the medicine needed for healing lies within us all.

CBCA Book Week (20-26 August) has brought children and books together across Australia each year since 1945, with children from around the country often dressing up in costumes at school, kindy or childcare to honour their favourite characters.

But it’s not all about the best costume!  CBCA Book Week begins on the 20 August with the announcement of the winners of Children’s Book of the Year Awards. These awards promote and celebrate contributions to literature for young Australians and kick off a week-long celebration of books and reading for young people.

During the annual celebration schools and public libraries spend one glorious week celebrating books and Australian children's authors and illustrators. Onkaparinga Libraries staff work with schools across the region to recognise and highlight Australian children's literature with visits from authors and illustrators, activities and displays.

The theme of CBCA Book Week for 2022 is ‘Dreaming with eyes open…’.
