New change rooms for Old Noarlunga
New change rooms at the Noarlunga Recreation Ground in Old Noarlunga will cater for all sportspeople, whatever their gender or abilities.
Opened earlier this month, the new $950,000 building comprises two change rooms with enclosed showering and toilet facilities, and storage for sporting equipment.
It has an accessible pathway from the car park and wide doorways.
The project received a $900,000 grant from the state government’s Office for Recreation, Sport and Racing, following an election commitment from Chris Picton MP, Member for Kaurna.
The council provided a further $43,545 toward the project.
The new building is in addition to a recent upgrade of the existing change rooms at the ground which included new change and toilet facilities, an accessible toilet and the inclusion of a gym.
Chris Picton MP said sporting clubs in the south deserve great facilities that can allow more people to be active and take part in team sport.
“This $900,000 investment from the state government will help boost women and girls participation in local footy," he said.
“These changerooms will improve access for women and girls, ensuring that they don’t have to get ready in car parks or toilets when there are multiple teams playing at Noarlunga Oval”
“This delivers another one of our election commitments for the south, allowing more opportunities for people to keep active and play sport."
Onkaparinga Mayor Moira Were said the City of Onkaparinga, the Noarlunga football and cricket clubs, and the Noarlunga Sports and Social Club banded together to advocate for funds for the building.
“This project shows the value of community and council collaboration,” she said.
“Clubs like those at the Noarlunga Recreation Ground contribute so much to Onkaparinga and our way of life, providing opportunities for families to stay healthy and active.”
“They also build connection and help people stay engaged with our communities – both on the field and off.
“When we invest in a project like this, we’re not just investing in bricks and mortar, we’re investing in communities.
“These projects are important in modernising the facilities at the recreation ground and making sure they’re accessible to everyone.”
The Noarlunga Recreation Ground caters for a range of sports and sporting clubs, including football, cricket, netball and tennis.
The new change rooms are among a raft of change room projects completed across Onkaparinga over the past few years.
