Free webinars for more sustainable homes

Published on 09 May 2023

Cost-of-living pressures and climate change are good reasons to create a sustainable home and lifestyle. But knowing where to start is not always easy.

A series of free webinars run by Renew on behalf of Resilient South can help you begin or continue along your sustainability journey.

The webinars offer easy and cheap improvements you can make straight up, such as the best times of day to use electricity, choosing energy-efficient appliances, or reducing heat or cooling loss to the external environment.

If you need help with the next steps, or have more resources at your disposal, there is also advice on options such as electric vehicles, sustainable design techniques, solar and batteries, and resilient building materials.

Upcoming seminars include:

  • Winter Comfort for Renters – Tuesday 16 May
  • Winter Comfort at Home – Tuesday 23 May
  • Electric Vehicles – Thursday 15 June
  • Buying GreenPower – Tuesday 4 July
  • All Electric Homes – Tuesday 25 July.

A series of webinars introducing sustainable building and renovation will be held in August.

Seminars on solar and batteries, summer comfort for renters and summer comfort will be offered in September and November.

South Australia is a world leader in the production and use of renewal energy and in the uptake of residential solar, with wind and solar accounting for more than 85 per cent of the state’s electricity production.

Reducing household and business energy costs and emissions is not just a matter of supply – how the energy is produced – but of demand. Reducing how much power, as well as water, is used in your home and business is an important part of becoming sustainable as well as saving money.

“There are many ways in which to make your home more climate-friendly, whether you’re renting, buying or you own your own home,” says Ynys Onsman, Manager of Strategy, Sustainability and Economic Growth at the City of Onkaparinga.

“The world is turning increasingly electric – fuelled by renewable energy – in a bid to reduce fossil-fuel impacts on the climate and to achieve net zero emissions.

“We know people in the south are keen to be part of this energy transition but they don’t always know where to begin.

“As these webinars show, making changes to reduce your energy and water use and so reduce your impact on the planet doesn’t have to be hard or costly.”

The City of Onkaparinga is a partner in Resilient South, along with the Government of South Australia and the cities of Holdfast Bay, Marion and Mitcham.

Resilient South aims to strengthen southern Adelaide so that local businesses, communities and environments can bounce back from the challenges of climate change and stay productive, connected and strong.

The free, 1.5-hour webinars will run on Zoom on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6.30 to 8pm, starting Tuesday 16 May.
