Four McLaren Vale region wineries have been honoured in the prestigious Halliday Wine Companion Awards, including the country’s “Best New Winery” award for Varney Wines.

Varney Wines was established in 2019 by winemaker Alan Varney and wife Kathrin, alongside their restaurant, Victor’s Place, at the gateway to McLaren Vale on Victor Harbor Road, Old Noarlunga.

Alan paid tribute to “the amazing people” around them following the national win.

“This is truly an honour,” Alan said.

“This award could not have been possible without the amazing people around us.

“A heartfelt thanks to our Sales and Marketing Manager Genevieve Ticehurst, Executive Chef Chris Bone and everyone from our team who has contributed to this.

“Kathrin and I are truly humbled, and we wish to thank all of our supporters, growers, collaborators, friends, and family for all the help we have received since we started chasing our dream.

Great things happen when you surround yourself with amazing people.”

Competition judge and Australian wine legend James Halliday also noted Alan’s relationships with growers in the winery’s listing in the 2021 Halliday Wine Companion guide.

“He has built strong relationships with local growers – many are lasting friends and trusted suppliers of grenache, mourvedre, shiraz, touriga, nebbiolo, cabernet sauvignon, fiano, semillon and chardonnay,” James wrote.

“All the grapes come from special vineyards in McLaren Vale and the Adelaide Hills (plus one small parcel from Langhorne Creek).”

Three other McLaren Vale wineries were honoured with a listing in the national “10 of the best new wineries” list.

Blewitt Springs Wine CoOx Hardy and Paralian Wines all made the list by earning five-star ratings in their Halliday Wine Companion debut.

The wins come as City of Onkaparinga launches its Go South Go Local campaign, which is aimed at supporting local businesses to recover and grow amid COVID-19, showcasing the amazing products and services available in our region, and promoting the incredible stories of Onkaparinga’s business community.
