Your say on arts, cultural development and community capacity

Passionate about the arts, cultural development and/or getting involved in your community?

Time is running out to have your say on two new strategic plans that will guide City of Onkaparinga’s focus on these areas over the next five years.

Head to City of Onkaparinga’s Your Say page to provide your feedback on the Arts and Cultural Development Strategic Plan and Draft Community Capacity Strategic Plan 2020-24 now, with consultation closing on Sunday 2 August and Wednesday 5 August respectively.

Your Say Onkaparinga is council’s online platform designed to give you the opportunity to have a say on important issues.

Arts and cultural development

Art is created with imagination and skill expressing important ideas or feelings. Activities like music, film and digital content, radio, literature and writing, dance and performance, and a diversity of visual arts such as painting, drawing, sculpture and murals, the making of objects.

Cultural development is how we express who we are; our shared beliefs, customs and traditions – through the arts in the form of painting, sculptures, language, music, dance, festivals and other forms.

The arts have a long history of encouraging social inclusion and participation and facilitating positive health outcomes via community art and health initiatives and creative design in our public places and spaces.

The City of Onkaparinga is home to many talented and creative people, with one of the highest concentrations of artists per capita in South Australia.

It boasts two main arts venues within the Port Noarlunga Arts Precinct – the Arts Centre and Sauerbier House.

Galleries, studios, exhibitions, theatres, concerts, performing groups, festivals and public art are an important element of the region’s artistic and cultural life.

What do you like about these offerings? What would you change? What are your ideas and priorities?

The Your Say page offers three simple ways to have your say – an ideas board, a survey and an ideas map. Your feedback is critical as council plans for the next five years.

Community capacity

City of Onkaparinga is committed to supporting its communities to be involved in local matters and work together to make life better.

This includes working towards community connectedness, developing skills, and providing opportunities for people to participate in and influence community life.

This is ‘community capacity’ and it’s important because a strong, vibrant community is one that works together, shares resources, and is optimistic about the future.

Council’s approach to building community capacity is based on social justice and community development principles.

Council strives to enable happy, healthy and rewarding lives for all people:

  • providing places and spaces for community connection, activity and skill development
  • valuing local leadership and involvement in decision-making
  • improving social equity and quality of life

Next steps

A report on the engagement outcomes and a final draft of the Community Capacity Strategic Plan will be presented to the Strategic Directions Committee for endorsement to Council on 6 October 2020.

Feedback on arts and cultural development will be fed into a draft plan that will be shared with the community for further comment on Your Say in December.

A report will then be provided to Council, which will endorse the plan ready for action in early 2021.
