A bench with a difference

The City of Onkaparinga’s first ‘smart bench’ has been installed at Rotary Park in Christies Beach, offering people an opportunity to sit down, charge their phones and access free Wi-Fi.

“This is the first bench of its kind in the area and we’re excited to trial this innovative new technology,” City of Onkaparinga Director of City Operations Kirk Richardson said.

“Not only is it free for people to charge up their devices, it also uses 100 per cent renewable solar energy, so it’s good for the environment too.”

Solar panels charge an internal battery system that allows wireless or USB charging of mobile devices day or night, while a 4G mobile router delivers a Wi-Fi signal within a 20 metre radius of the bench.

The smart bench also features an in-built cooling system to ensure the seat temperature remains pleasant in warm weather.

The smart bench trial is part of a series of recent improvements at Rotary Park including powered bollards, water taps and lighting making it easier for the community to stage events at this popular site.
