Boosting your digital know-how

Published on 14 April 2025

For many people, the challenges of using technology – whether it’s smartphones, computers or navigating the web – can be daunting. That's where the digital inclusion initiatives offered at the City of Onkaparinga’s libraries are making a difference.

A phone-hacking incident is what prompted Onkaparinga library member Maureen to sign up for the free 5-week Demystifying Technology course at the Hub Library.

While Maureen spent much of her career working with computers, she admits to feeling a bit apprehensive about technology, particularly her phone.

"My daughter tried to help when I was hacked, but we couldn’t figure it out," Maureen recalls.

"She suggested I visit the library to learn how to solve the issue and learn more about what I can do with my phone."

Participating in the course became an eye-opening journey.

"I've realised I can do so much more with my phone and have learnt to use the iPad, including how to edit photos," she says with confidence.

“I do a lot more on my phone now, from talking to family who live overseas on Messenger to transferring money and paying bills.”

“Everything is online and I need to keep up so I’m not left behind.”

Maureen’s story is one of many where people are looking for help to better understand the devices they use every day.

The team at the libraries is well-equipped to help individuals navigate common hurdles and show them the ins and outs of devices, while helping them become more confident.

The Demystifying Technology course introduces participants to the basics of iPhones and iPads from turning the device on and off to taking photos, sending emails and using the internet.

For those who prefer one-on-one help to a specific issue, the library also offers tailored 30-minute sessions which can be booked in advance. They can assist with accessing email, downloading files, and completing online forms and applications. There’s also regular information sessions and workshops on various topics such as artificial intelligence, library apps, how to sell items online, avoiding scams and staying safe online throughout the year.

The council’s commitment to digital inclusion started in 1995 when the libraries were one of the first public services to offer free internet access, along with free information sessions on searching the web. As technology evolved, so did the need for digital education.

David from the Hub Library says seeing people build their digital skills with a little guidance from the team is hugely rewarding.

“Seeing their confidence grow when they master a task – like attaching a photo to an email or being able to connect with friends and family online – is really fulfilling,” David says.

But there’s one situation that’s a real highlight for him.

“We had a gentleman approach us for help after being made redundant from his job, and for the first time in over 20 years was seeking employment.

“He had minimal computer skills, so, overtime, we showed him how to use the library computers to find job adverts and then guided him on preparing a resume and writing an application.

“Sometime later he returned to thanks us as he was successful in securing a new job.”

David acknowledges that keeping pace with digital advancements can be overwhelming, but no-one is ever too old to learn or too behind to start learning.

“By learning more about technology you can take advantage of all the wonderful things that you can do with it,” he says with a smile.

“There’s no pressure to become an expert – you only need to learn what’s helpful to you.”

For Maureen, she not only got the help she needed, but she’s eager to keep learning. “I’ve already suggested to a friend that she should come to the library for help with her laptop,” Maureen said.
