What can people expect at the Hopgood on 15 August?

Dolly: I Will Always Love You will take you on a musical journey through Dolly Parton’s incredible career, featuring many of her biggest hits, beautiful storytelling, plenty of laughs, and of course a touch of rhinestone glamour. Tell us about the genesis of this show and what inspired you to start it?

I've always admired Dolly Parton, not only for her extraordinary songwriting and iconic voice, but for the person she is. She has an authenticity and warmth that connects with people across generations. As I started my career in musical theatre, I found myself continually drawn to her music because of the stories, emotion and honesty in her songs. The idea for the show grew from a desire to celebrate Dolly’s legacy in a way that felt respectful, entertaining and true to who she is. The more I performed her music, the more I realised how deeply audiences connected with it.

What makes Dolly Parton so special? Where would you suggest someone who’s new to Dolly Parton start?

If new to Dolly Parton, I recommend starting with the classics (‘Jolene’,’ 9 to 5’, ‘I Will Always Love You’). These are such a testament to her songwriting ability as they stand the test of time, and continue to be covered by modern-day artists. She actually wrote ‘Jolene’ and ‘I Will Always Love You’ in the same session. What a legend! Also, I suggest checking out her films because they really showcase her larger-than-life personality. Myy favourite is Rhinestone, in which Dolly's character has teach Sylvester Stallone's character to be a country singer.

You’re currently taking this show across Australia – where has this act taken you?

I’m so lucky to be able to see so many parts of our beautiful country while doing what I love. We have so many stunning theatres across Australia and New Zealand, and it’s such a privilege to perform in these venues. I’ve also been able to travel to some gorgeous places in the Pacific, whilst performing my Dolly tribute onboard cruise ships. I really enjoy meeting the Dolly fans post show, and hearing them share their memories of the songs and stories. I'm very excited to be returning to the newly renovated Hopgood Theatre. The last time I performed there was 2019!
