Positive ageing legends honoured

More than 100 people gathered at South Adelaide Football Club late last month to honour and celebrate this year’s Every Generation Onkaparinga Award nominees, who are helping the community age well in the region.

The annual council awards recognise everyday people who exemplify or contribute to positive ageing in the region with awards presented in 3 categories.

City of Onkaparinga Mayor Moira Were, who presented the awards, said the nominees’ dedication and generosity embody the spirit of the community.

“It was wonderful to see people of all generations playing a part in making the City of Onkaparinga a welcoming, inclusive, and thriving community for all,” she said.

“With nominees ranging in age from 14 to 90, including 2 student nominees, it was a night that genuinely lived up to the name ‘Every Generation’.”

Meet the winners

2026 Intergenerational Winner – Stitch ‘n Fix

The Intergenerational Award category recognises those who bring the generations together, reduce ageism and demonstrate the value of intergenerational connection.

For 7 years, the Stitch ’n Fix Sewing Group has brought people of all ages together through sewing, mending and sustainable craft projects.

By sharing practical skills, supporting young people and fostering intergenerational connections, the group has built a welcoming and inclusive community.

Their commitment to sustainability, lifelong learning and community spirit continues to create a lasting positive impact.

2026 Group Winner – The Aldinga Community Shed – woodworking volunteers

The Group Award category recognises groups that have a clear and positive impact by supporting older people to be active, engaged and purposeful members of the Onkaparinga community.

The Aldinga Community Shed woodworking volunteers are a remarkable team of 17 dedicated community members who generously share their skills, experience and time to support a thriving woodworking program that fosters learning, friendship and wellbeing.

With a combined 103 years of service, they create a safe, welcoming and inclusive environment where people of all ages and abilities can develop skills, build confidence and form meaningful connections.

2026 Individual Winner – Ron Sturgess

The Individual Award category recognises individuals for their exceptional service and for demonstrating the true spirit of positive ageing. They’re role models in their communities, and through their dedication, generosity and ongoing involvement, they enrich the lives of others, strengthen community connections, and show us that age is no barrier to making a difference.

At 90 years of age, Ron has shown remarkable leadership and community spirit by creating and growing an all-inclusive indoor carpet bowling program that brings people together, promotes social connection and supports active ageing.

Ron has established a lasting legacy that extends beyond the program. His enthusiasm, generosity and commitment to helping others make him a true example of ageing with zest.
