Federal funding boost for Norman Road reconstruction

Published on 17 February 2026

The City of Onkaparinga has secured $1.89 million in federal funding for a reconstruction of Norman Road, Aldinga Beach.

The funding – secured through the Australian Government’s Safer Local Roads and Infrastructure Program – will see the road reconstructed from the newly upgraded Main South Road, through to a large culvert located at 145 Norman Road, with works also including shoulder sealing from the culvert through to Acacia Terrace.

The project will widen the road surface to a consistent, safe width of 9.5 metres, including 1.5 metre sealed shoulders.

The project will also address significant pavement and seal defects, including shape deformation, potholes and edge breaks. The works will prevent further deterioration of the pavement and ensure the road remains fit for purpose. The entire project is scheduled for completion in 2026–27.

City of Onkaparinga Mayor Moira Were said Council was grateful to have secured the federal funding.

“Applying for funding through these kinds of programs helps us to deliver better outcomes for ratepayers, and supports our Community Vision and state and federal strategies to improve road safety,” she said.

“The funding agreement requires us to contribute at least 50 per cent towards the overall costs.

“We’ve also been successful in working with SA Water on this project, and they’re about to upgrade their water main along Norman Road before our roadworks begin.”

Norman Road is one of 6 road renewal projects recently completed, underway or coming soon to the value of approximately $8.4 million. Others include Hackham’s Collins Parade (for which the council secured $925,000 through the LGA’s Special Local Roads Program); Woodcroft’s Windemere Court and Bains Road; Morphett Vale’s Abebe Court, Alice Crescent and Carol Crescent. The council is also resealing approximately 22.7km of roads through its annual Road Reseal program.

The federal funding announcement follows additional state government funding – secured through its Black Spot Program – for 2 road safety projects alongside schools – a traffic calming scheme at Craigburn Primary School on Murrays Hill Road, Flagstaff Hill ($154,500); and a school crossing at Antonio Catholic School on Bains Road, Morphett Vale ($100,700). The council will fund a new koala crossing at Southern Vales Christian College on States Road, Morphett Vale.
