Improve your digital skills during Get Online Week

Published on 10 October 2022

Feeling overwhelmed by the rapid pace of digital technology, and want to sharpen your skills and stay connected?

Or do you have a family member or friend who could use a little help getting online?

All six Onkaparinga libraries are providing fun digital skills activities during Get Online Week 2022 which runs from 17 to 23 October.

Get Online Week is a campaign organised by the Good Things Foundation aiming to close the digital divide. It supports people to improve their digital skills and get motivated to learn more.

This year’s campaign theme is “Try one thing’ and, through a $6000 grant from the Good Things Foundation, Onkaparinga’s libraries are inviting the community to attend a digital help session.

Sessions include:

Come and Try Everything Digital at Aberfoyle Community Centre

Digital Help Day at  your local library

Digital Morning Tea at Colonnades Shopping Centre

Being Digital – Tech Talks at Aldinga Library

Being Digital- Virtual Reality at Woodcroft Library

Aldinga/Willunga Libraries Team Leader Andrew Berney encourages older residents to try one thing and have a free ‘hands-on’ experience from a variety of digital devices.

“We know, using data from the Australian Digital Inclusion Index, that there are many of our older residents who face significant challenges in their daily lives because they don’t have the skills or experiences to take advantage of online opportunities”, Andrew said.

“As part of our ongoing Digital Inclusion Program, Onkaparinga Libraries are participating in Get Online Week and our aim is to inform our local community about the support available from our libraries and other organisations.

“We believe everyone deserves the opportunity to safely participate in our digital world and no one should be left behind”.

A recent participant in digital help sessions offered by the Hub Library expressed their gratitude at how the sessions improved their quality of life and led to securing a new job.

“Over several weeks, staff at the library helped me enormously to navigate online forms and questionnaires in my bid to secure employment,” she said.

“I am now ready to start my new job thanks to the help provided. I could not have done it without them.”
