Meet your new councillor

City of Onkaparinga has a new councillor following a supplementary election to fill a vacancy in the Mid Coast ward.

Sue Tonkin, who was an inaugural Onkaparinga councillor in the late 1990s and also served on the former Happy Valley Council, was officially elected on Friday 11 September by obtaining 825 votes after the distribution of preferences.

She joins Councillor Bill Jamieson as one of two elected members on the Mid Coast ward, following the resignation of Beau Cowan due to illness.

Councillor Tonkin, who has lived in the City of Onkaparinga area for 45 years, said one of her goals was helping to revitalise Beach Road, Christies Beach.

“I’m particularly interested in finding a way to make the precinct a more vibrant coastal spot, as it deserves to be,” she said.

She is also passionate about addressing homelessness, domestic violence, ageing, youth engagement and poverty.

“My current work in community housing gives me an awareness of the difficulties experienced by some of the residents in our region [so] I’m very interested in working with support agencies to alleviate some of these issues,” she said.

City of Onkaparinga is made up of six wards, each with two elected members plus a mayor. The Mid Coast ward includes the suburbs of Seaford Meadows, Port Noarlunga South, Noarlunga Centre, Christies Beach and Christie Downs, O’Sullivan Beach and Lonsdale.
