Our libraries are too good to lose

Published on 04 February 2026

Onkaparinga’s 6 libraries attracted more than 649,000 visits and loaned more than 1.3 million library items – including books, DVDs, sporting equipment and toys – in 2024–25.

But South Australian libraries such as Onkaparinga’s are much more than just a place to borrow things.

They’re also inclusive, safe, welcoming and trusted community institutions that support literacy, digital access, lifelong learning and connection for people of all ages; as well as helping to reduce everyday costs for individuals and families as cost-of-living pressures rise.

Unfortunately, SA libraries are at risk because of a current state government funding deal that doesn’t include CPI indexation, which will see public libraries lose $11.5 million over 5 years.

This could mean cuts to books and programs, shorter opening hours, and fewer staff on hand to help you in times of need.

It’s the reason LGA South Australia and councils such as Onkaparinga are calling on the state government to urgently increase funding to ensure SA’s 140+ libraries can keep pace with rising costs and community expectations, and to continue playing their essential role.

City of Onkaparinga Mayor Moira Were urged the community to get involved.

“Libraries such as Onkaparinga’s 6 are essential community infrastructure, and we know that for every dollar invested, they return nearly $3 in economic and social benefits to the community,” she said.

“Libraries aren’t just about books. They’re also vital hubs for people to access free wifi; print off resumes; get help with digital devices; pursue education; make new friends with a local group, event or workshop; or even just seek shelter during extreme heat.

“Currently, 84 per cent of public library funding comes from local councils, and without increased and indexed funding, library services, opening hours and community programs are at risk.

“That’s why we’re backing LGA SA’s call for fair, indexed funding – so these services remain accessible for everyone. You can help by contacting your local member of parliament (MP) to show just how important public libraries are to you and your community, and advocate for increased state funding.”
