EVENT POSTPONED: Reconciliation in the South

Published on 16 May 2025

POSTPONED: Due to the current weather conditions and weather forecast, the tough decision has been made to postpone the Reconciliation in the South event. Another date is being explored.

You’re invited to a free community open day in Christies Beach’s Rotary Park on Tuesday 27 May during National Reconciliation Week.

The annual family friendly Reconciliation in the South event (10am to 2pm) will feature a free barbecue and food, performances by local musicians, schools and a DJ, First Nations sports activities, art and craft activities, more than 20 local stallholders and more.

This year’s event is about bringing the whole community together to better understand reconciliation and explore meaningful ways to work it out together in the City of Onkaparinga.

Guided by the cultural principles of respect and contribution, this approach strengthens community relationships and benefits the nation as a whole.

The council does this by working with community Elders, community members and service groups; Neporendi Aboriginal Forum Incorporated and Neporendi Aboriginal Community Centre staff and volunteers; and with the support of Joining Hands and Minds – a network of local agencies that provide services to the First Nations community.

The council also continues to support reconciliation through the delivery of its Reconciliation Action Plan. The councils is currently developing a new Innovate Reconciliation Action Plan, which will include a range of actions across four key areas – relationships, respect, opportunities and governance –following the delivery of its Reconciliation Action Plan 2022–24 (Reflect).

You can nominate your organisation or business for a Mayor's Reconciliation Week Recognition Award to be presented during the Reconciliation in the South event. Head to the council's website to nominate by Tuesday 20 May.

About National Reconciliation Week

National Reconciliation Week (27 May to 3 June) is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia.

The dates for NRW remain the same each year – 27 May to 3 June. These dates commemorate two significant milestones in the reconciliation journey – the successful 1967 referendum and the High Court Mabo decision respectively.

This year’s theme, Bridging Now to Next, reflects the ongoing connection between past, present and future.

Bridging Now to Next calls on all Australians to step forward together, to look ahead and continue the push forward as past lessons guide us.

The National Reconciliation Week artwork, pictured, was created by Kalkadoon woman, Bree Buttenshaw. Native plants − which are known for regenerating after fire and thriving through adversity − symbolise our collective strength and the possibilities of renewal. This is a time for growth, reflection, and commitment to walking together.
