Record turnout for Mv2 Cup
Published on 06 December 2024
Almost 100 registered competitors and more than 400 spectators descended on Christie Downs’ Niipu-niipu Wama/Morton Park last Saturday 30 November for the third annual Mv2 Cup.
The packed field (results below) and huge crowds made for the largest turnout ever for Southern Adelaide’s premier local skateboarding event.
The surge in participation has been attributed to the free weekly skate coaching sessions held at the skate park – a key initiative of the City of Onkaparinga and Roger Rasheed Sports Foundation Program.
The Mv2 Cup is a collaboration between the City of Onkaparinga Youth team, Noarlunga skate shop Mv2, and coaching business Free Mind Skate School.
This year’s event also received generous support from a host of local sponsors, including Little Radlings, Chicks on Wheels, Sk8 Mates, Bradley’s Bakery, Steak Butcher Shoppe, All City Roof Restoration and Master Minds Tattoo.
With its grassroots focus, the Mv2 Cup offers a valuable opportunity for local skaters to gain competition experience ahead of the national BMD Southern Rumble, set to take place in January 2025 at Niipu-niipu Wama/Morton Park.
The excitement and talent showcased at this year’s Mv2 Cup highlight the strength and growth of the local skating community, setting the stage for even greater achievements in the year ahead.
Mv2 owner, Eric Varga, said he couldn’t believe how big the contest got this year.
“Ninety-four registered skaters is huge,” he said.
“Not only does it make a great community event, it's a chance to showcase what the skateboarding subculture is all about.
“It was a great representation of how when local business, the council and community work together and are on the same page, big things will happen."
Free Mind Skate School's Josh Smith said he couldn’t be happier with how the event unfolded.
“After all the great feedback from last year, we thought it would be hard to top,” he said.
“But not only did we see a big jump in competitor numbers this year, we also had a much bigger crowd, and the level of skateboarding on display was incredible.
“I’m super grateful to everyone who helped make this day possible, particularly Nadia and Jo from the Onkaparinga Council, but I’m even more grateful to everyone who came along and had a great time.
“Without competitors and parents, there is no show! It was amazing to see so much of the skate community come together in one place and showcase why this is one of the best communities you could hope to be a part of.
“Finally, a massive thanks to Eric from Mv2 for all he does within the skating community. This is all for you, legend!"
Open men’s winner Jack Sadler said he was “absolutely hyped” on this year’s Mv2 Cup.
"I’m proud of how I skated and am grateful for the win personally, but I was even more hyped to have so many awesome skaters out there sharing the park with me,” he said.
“It was a heavy competition! I want to say a big thanks to Eric from Mv2 for supporting me on my skating journey since I was just a little kid, it will forever be appreciated.
“And finally, a massive thanks to Josh from Free Mind Skate School for all the support and guidance over the years. Without you, I wouldn't be able to spend as much time working on my own skating as I do. So, big love to Eric and Josh!”
