Spring into fitness and fun

Spring means sunny days, the return of thongs and vibrant blooming gardens.

In Port Noarlunga and Seaford Meadows, spring will also see a popular beach and reserve filled with people of all ages keeping healthy and active thanks to two exciting new programs – one backed by two-time Olympian Jane Flemming.

Live Life Get Active

Starting on Tuesday 15 October, Seaford Meadows’ Quarry Reserve (Grand Boulevard) will host free outdoor group cross training, boxing and yoga classes, as well as personalised healthy eating plans and support, each weekday during school terms.

The free outdoor “activity camps”, provided by not-for-profit charity Live Life Get Active and run by local qualified trainers, are aimed at tackling health, fitness and happiness issues facing people today, including obesity, diabetes, mental health and illness recovery.

Two-time Olympian and dual Commonwealth Games gold medallist Jane Flemming is a Live Life Get Active ambassador, and she says the program’s welcoming and non-intimidating environment is what sets it apart from other offerings.

“It is with great pride that we say anyone can take part in a Live Life Get Active class and anyone can draw measurable and sustained benefit from our program,” says the former track and field star, who’ll help launch the Seaford Meadows sessions on Tuesday 15 October.

“Just come along and try it – you have absolutely nothing to lose! Registration is free, equipment is free, we provide a free personalised nutrition plan upon signing up and you can book into as many sessions as you like.

“Don’t worry if you haven’t exercised in a while, or ever. This is a class of no judgement and our local, community-minded trainers can tailor our exercises to all abilities.

“If that isn’t enough, on average, our members who attended three times a week in 2018 lost a whopping five centimetres from around their waist!”

Getting involved is as simple as registering at the Live Life Get Active website. Once registered you can book into as many free classes as you’d like (one week in advance).

The 9:30am to 10:15am classes will run for 12 months and participants must be aged 18 or over.

Beach volleyball comes to the south

Meantime, less than five kilometres down the road, people of all ages can keep fit, have fun and feel the sand between their toes at the south’s sole beach volleyball hub – a partnership between council and Volleyball SA – at Port Noarlunga.

New nets will be erected on the northern side of the jetty, between the jetty and the boat ramp, in late September, and remain up until the end of summer for anyone to have a game with family and friends (make sure to bring a ball).

Two free “Come and Try” events will be held (on Wednesdays 9 and 16 October, 6-7pm) for adults and children aged 7+, where you can enjoy a free session that includes skills training and coaching.

A weekly social competition (Wednesdays from 6pm) for teams of four will also kick off from 23 October and run through until late March, suitable for all ability levels.

Grab three mates and register your team before 6 November to join the fun!

Healthy Active Lifestyles Onkaparinga

Both Live Life Get Active and beach volleyball have been made possible by Healthy Active Lifestyles Onkaparinga (HALO), Council’s active lifestyle program encouraging participation in sport and active recreation and promoting healthy active lifestyle choices.

City of Onkaparinga Recreation Services Officer, Gail Burns, says HALO’s new spring and summer offerings were perfect ways for people to improve their health and happiness in fun and supportive group settings.

“Research shows that exercising outdoors, as well as improving your physical fitness, is a great way to improve your happiness and mental health,” Gail says.

“Both of these new programs take advantage of beautiful spaces in our city, and also help connect people within the community.”
