Adopt a Tree

Imagine your street transformed into a tree-lined oasis, filled with cool spots to provide relief on a hot summer’s day.

City of Onkaparinga homeowners can now play their part in increasing the urban forest by adopting a tree. Today the City of Onkaparinga launches its exciting new Adopt a Tree program. Eligible residents will be able to apply for a tree to be planted on their verge to provide shade as well as shelter and a food source for birds and other wildlife.

Council will grow the tree in their nursery, plant it on your verge, provide informal health checks and prune it. Your role will be to water and care for your tree so it survives.

Council has a total of 300 trees available annually in the Adopt a Tree program and from February 14 eligible residents will be able to apply for one free tree per household. Your tree will be planted between April and September and will join the thousands of trees planted by council every year as part of their target to plant 100,000 trees on street verges, waterways and parks by 2037.

To date council field crews have planted more than 40,000 trees and each one of these will assist in providing shade, cooling, clean air, reduced stormwater runoff and habitat for our birds and wildlife.
