The City of Onkaparinga welcomes you to its Australia Day events on Sunday 26 January, starting with free breakfasts and closing with brilliant fireworks at the family fair.
The sizzling breakfasts start from 8am and – for those who like a sleep-in – continue until 11am. They’ll be at three locations across the council area: Aberfoyle Park, Noarlunga Centre and Willunga.
Along with the food, there will be entertainment, activities for the children, and the chance to meet and mix with your community. Bring along a picnic rug or chair for maximum comfort, and sunblock and a hat for your health.
During the day, 67 Onkaparinga residents will be welcomed as new Australian citizens and local legends will be recognised in the council’s Australia Day Awards.
The awards recognise individuals and groups who have made outstanding contributions to Onkaparinga during the year. Sixteen individuals and groups were nominated across four categories for this year’s awards:
- Citizen of the Year
- Young Citizen of the Year
- Sportsperson of the Year
- Community Event of the Year.
The Australia Day Awards and Citizenship Ceremony, at the South Adelaide Football Club, is open to the public but has limited seating.
To finish the day with a bang, the Australia Day Family Fair kicks off at the South Adelaide Football Club in Noarlunga Downs at 5.30pm.
The fair is a festival of entertainment, food, market stalls, activities and – of course – the grand finale of fireworks.
On stage, it’s about the music, fast and furious, soothing and soulful, with the Amazing Drumming Monkeys, singer and guitarist Rebma Rose, kids’ entertainers Bop Till You Drop, and party band Wildside. To break up the groove, the Animals Anonymous stage show lets you get up close and personal with all things slithery and furry.
Off stage, take your pick of craft and curios stalls, fabulous food and beverages, and activities like virtual reality pods, pedal karts, face painting and a rock-climbing wall.
The fireworks hit the skies at around 9.24pm or a little after.
Entry to the fair is free. Feel free to bring your own food – and don’t’ forget a picnic blanket or chairs.
