Climate Action Week is coming to Adelaide – and Onkaparinga – for the first time from Monday 27 July.
Sign up for council-supported events to celebrate the week: make an upcycled denim bag, explore renewable energy, or become a citizen scientist by exploring plants and wildlife at a local wetland.
You can join Wild Woman of Willunga, Brenda, on Wednesday 29 July to create an upcycled bag from old jeans, reducing textile waste and contributing to the circular economy.
Or you can take part in a BioBlitz, joining in an after-school nature exploration at Byards Road Wetlands (pictured) in Reynella East on Friday 31 July, where you’ll be part of uncovering the incredible biodiversity of the local area as you search for, identify and record as many plant, animal and fungi species as possible.
A BioBlitz is a snapshot study of a specific location, where scientists and the community work together to survey and record as many species as possible within a nominated timeframe. See more at the BioBlitz hub on the Australian Citizen Science Association website.
If you want to know more about home solar and batteries, attend a free information session on Sunday 2 August with independent energy expert from The Energy Project, Ryan Halyburton. Whether you're curious about adding a battery to your existing solar system, starting from scratch or learning about virtual power plants, get the insights you need to make smarter, more informed energy choices.
Other council events that promote a sustainable Onkaparinga are also being held just before Climate Action Week.
On Saturday 25 July, bring along your family and friends to a community planting day at the Candy Road wetland in Happy Valley from 10am to 12:30pm. The day is part of the council’s Urban Creek Resilience and Recovery Project, which incorporates the Panalatinga and Serpentine Creeks and is funded by the Australian Government’s Urban Rivers and Catchments Program
On National Tree Day – Sunday 26 July – get your hands dirty alongside other community members to help rewild the Seaford wetlands on Seaford Road in Seaford Meadows from 10:30am.
