Pride Month down south

Every June, Pride Month celebrates the diversity of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex communities, and there are a range of events happening in Onkaparinga.

Check out the list below for some ideas on how you can get involved, and follow the Pride of the South Facebook page for regular posts aimed at Adelaide’s southern LGBTIQ communities during Pride Month.

Library events

There are a range of events happening at Onkaparinga Libraries during Pride Month, from movies, to crafts and TED Talks.

On Wednesday 14 June (3-4pm) you can enjoy free streamed TED Talks in Noarlunga Library’s community room where you’ll hear from a writer, a model/activist, an artist/activist and two documentary filmmakers about their personal stories of LGBTIQ+ pride, and about what pride looks like around the world. Refreshments will be provided and bookings are encouraged but not essential.

On Wednesday 21 June (10am to 12pm), you can create some Pride Month-themed crafts—including a 3D-printed rainbow wall hanging, pronoun badges and rainbow wreaths—at Noarlunga Library. Bookings ($5) are essential and the event is for those aged 15+.

On Thursday 29 June you can enjoy two events, the first being a free movie matinee screening of Rocketman—the sparkling, camp movie retelling of the life of Elton John—at Noarlunga Library. Running from 1:30pm, coffee, tea and biscuits are provided. Bookings encouraged.

Then, from 6–8pm, you can join a Pop Art for Pride Design Workshop ($15) at Seaford Library, where you’ll learn to create a pop art design to take home using mixed media techniques (including collage, painting and drawing) with artist, Cat Leonard of Splashout Art Studios. Suitable for adults, booking essential.

Spark Pride Month Dance Party for Onkaparinga youth

Studio 20 Youth Centre in Aldinga is hosting a Spark Pride Month Dance Party for 12-20-year-olds on Friday 23 June (6–8pm, $10)

The epic dance party event allows punters to dress up and represent the rainbow community. Get creative at the DIY glitter bar, have some fun in the photo booth, and dance the night away with the DJ! The dress code is glitz and glam (think glitter, sparkles, colour and fun).

The event is running under the youth centre’s wider Spark fortnightly LGBTQIA+ program, which has been running successfully for 12 months and provides young people aged 12–17 to connect with others in a safe and inclusive space.

This program comes in response to the needs identified by young people in Onkaparinga for safe and inclusive spaces.

Hackham Community Centre events

Hackham Community Centre is hosting two events around Pride Month, with the first being a Queer Minds Matter workshop with artist, Calamity Tash, on Friday 30 June (6–9pm) allowing you to get crafty while talking about inner strength. The free event is aimed at people aged 15+, all welcome.

The following day (Saturday 1 July), the centre will then host Pride of the South’s free monthly Connect/Create day, offering a range of creative activities and opportunities to connect in your community. Tea, coffee and hot chocolate are supplied, BYO nibbles.
