Onkaparinga Libraries have added two innovative reading devices to their range of tools and resources to help those with reading and learning difficulties.
The ReaderPen is a tool that can help people with reading and learning difficulties when studying and reading, and Onkaparinga Libraries have two available to borrow now.
The portable and discreet device has a wealth of features to help remove the stigma surrounding dyslexia, giving people of all ages the confidence and independence to enjoy literacy with comfort.
Functions of the ReaderPen include text-to-speech technology to develop reading comprehension and confidence, multiple built-in dictionaries to help nurture language learners, and fast and effective scanning so you can save a word, paragraph or even a full page as a file to your computer.
The devices join a range of tools and resources already on offer at Onkaparinga Libraries for those with dyslexia, vision impairment, low-literacy, dementia or memory loss. These include:
- a range of dyslexia-friendly fiction available for adults and children (printed in the popular Dyslexie font), with Libby and BorrowBox digital resources also being a great option for accessing titles in a dyslexia-friendly font
- a small range of braille books available, with a combination of tactile and visual features with braille and large print
- a short reads collection featuring high-interest, easy-to-read fiction books available for adults
- a Memory Hub for those affected by dementia and memory loss, their carers, and others in the community looking for information, support and resources. The hub includes books on topics such as memory loss, keeping your brain healthy and caring for someone effected by dementia; DVDs offering general information and activities; and activities and reminiscence kits plus puzzles and books designed to keep the mind active and healthy.
