Regen returns with Morton Road Mash-Up

Christie Downs’ Morton Park/Niipu-niipu Wama will be jam-packed with action on Saturday 29 October with the inaugural Morton Road Mash-Up youth event.

The free 12–4pm event—which includes the MV2 Cup skateboarding comp, Roger Rasheed Sports Foundation (RRSF) programs, youth activities from Christie Downs Community House, food trucks, live music, youth markets and more—is the first of council’s new Regen Series, replacing what was formerly a single event.

City of Onkaparinga Community Development Officer-Youth, Jolyn Phillipps, said seven Regen events will be held across the city in 2022–23, all of them planned and implemented by young people, for young people.

“The Morton Road Mash-Up is first cab off the ranks and we couldn’t be more excited to host the MV2 Cup, RRSF’s life-changing programs, and a bunch of other free and fun stuff including youth markets and art displays,” she said.

“The $3.5 million Morton Road Sports and Community Hub is now a year old, and already more than 1000 people have attended 20-plus free sports coaching and mentoring programs delivered through the RRSF.

“Not only that, the hub’s skate park—considered one of the best in the state—has attracted thousands from local communities and across SA.

“Like previous Regen events, the Onkaparinga Youth team is working directly with young people to plan and implement the Mash-Up, and this will continue with the other six events over the next 12 months.

“Some of the young people working on the Regen Series are even gaining key event management skills and accreditation through our partnership with TAFE SA.

“The move to a series of events rather than a one-off means Regen is now more accessible for young people across the city, and it provides more opportunities for different groups to get involved and collaborate.

“We can’t wait to see everyone at the Morton Road Mash-Up, and will then turn our attention to the second Regen Series event—the music-based Amped Up at Base 10 Youth Centre in Old Reynella on Friday 9 December.”
