Work begins on new Aldinga skate park
Work has begun on the new Aldinga skate park – the latest piece of a major long-term vision to redevelop Aldinga Sports Park.
The new skate park was designed by CONVIC – a world leader in skate park and youth space design and construction – and it’ll be built south of the Aldinga football oval, just west of Main South Road.
The skate park has been made possible through a $1.3 million state government grant with the support of Leon Bignell, Member for Mawson.
The City of Onkaparinga undertook community engagement on the project in December 2023, and then again in March-April 2024 once a draft concept plan had been created.
The community’s feedback on the draft concept plan resulted in several changes to the final skate design, including increased bowl height for advanced users, replacing the flow section with a street plaza (including beginner ramps), increased footprint with open flat space to increase the park’s capacity and aid beginners, and the integration of unique skate features. Check out the final design report for more details.
The project also includes lighting, tree planting, irrigated turf for seating and viewing, a shelter with benches, footpaths and a car park.
Work on the skate park facility will be completed in December 2024, subject to weather conditions.
Work will predominately take place between 7am and 5pm on Monday to Friday, and 7am to 2pm on Saturday. There will be no access to the site during the construction period.
Following the completion of the skate park, the surrounding landscape work will be undertaken by a separate contractor from January to March 2025.
City of Onkaparinga Director Operations Kirk Richardson said it was an exciting time to be in Aldinga.
“This skate park will be a fantastic addition to the Aldinga Sports Park, which has already undergone a massive transformation in the past few years with funding from the council, state and federal governments,” he said.
“Community feedback has been crucial to the final design, which caters to users of all ages, from beginners right through to advanced.
“It’s also going to be a perfect spot to socialise and spectate, and play host to key events and competitions.
“Thank you to everyone who provided feedback during our community engagements and to the state government for the funding to make it happen.”
