A cracking event

Santa is once again Christies Beach-bound, for the 2019 City of Onkaparinga Christmas Pageant.

“What happens if you eat Christmas decorations? You get tinsellitis.”

This was the winning Christmas cracker joke that won Seaford Rise youngster Beau, then aged six, the best seat in the house at the last City of Onkaparinga Christmas Pageant: in the sleigh right next to the man in red himself.

“He really loved it,” says Beau’s mother Alecia Belcher. “He thought it was awesome.”

With excitement building for the 2019 pageant, the council has once again run the popular Christmas cracker joke competition, offering young jokesters the chance to meet and ride with Santa. The results will be announced soon.

Beau’s advice for the 2019 winner is to, “have a big smile and a big wave”.

This year’s pageant will be held on Sunday 17 November. Kicking off at 10am, a new route will see the parade of dance troupes, marching bands and floats from community groups start from the corner of Hunt Crescent and Beach Road and travel along Beach Road towards the Esplanade.

Beach Road traders will get into the Christmas spirit, providing opportunities to cross a Christmas gift or two off your list, and of course grab something delicious to eat and drink while you’re waiting for Santa to arrive.

For the second year, Christmas cheer will be spread from speakers along Beach Road broadcasting Christmas music and commentary during the event.

Following the pageant, Christmas in the Park will again be staged from 11am until 1pm at Rotary Park. The free event will feature live music, entertainment such as Miss Oopy’s kids’ disco and bubble show, market stalls and opportunities for a photo with Santa.

Council hopes to build on the success of last year’s event. Held in perfect weather, the 2018 pageant saw one of the biggest-ever crowds of 8000 lining the streets and about 1500 participants representing 62 community groups.
