Gear up for a truck-load of fun

Unless you have a young child, it’s likely you don’t notice every waste truck, tractor, cherry picker or excavator.

But, for the little-tackers, trucks are fascinating and when one goes past they excitedly (and sometimes repetitively) yell “truck!”.

Perhaps it’s their size, their flashing lights, the robotic-like controls that lift and move things, the loud noises they make, or the friendly person behind the wheel who gives a wave or honks the horn as they go past. Or, to them, it’s just staggering to see their favourite toys out and about on the road. Whatever it is, trucks in action are impressive, and in April children will be able to check out some of their favourite trucks and vehicles at the City of Onkaparinga’s inaugural Touch a Truck event.

The free interactive event enables children and their families to see, explore and learn about the different kinds of vehicles that work around their community.

Approximately 30 council trucks and vehicles will be on display including a waste truck, cat loader, cherry picker, backhoe, crane truck, excavator, grader and street sweeper.

And if the trucks aren’t enough, there will also be face painting and jumping castles.

City of Onkaparinga Mayor Erin Thompson says council is extremely excited to showcase a range of council trucks and other interesting vehicles that children – and even those young at heart – can explore.

“Touch a Truck is a fantastic opportunity for kids to get a close-up look at a range of council trucks and construction equipment, and even get behind the wheel, honk horns and meet the men and women who drive these extraordinary vehicles,” she says.

“The event is also a chance to learn about the work our City Operations team does, with vehicle operators on-hand to share what they do, provide information on the vehicles and answer any questions.”

“Kids see these trucks every day and this event is a great way for them to see them up close; it’s set to be a very exciting experience for the little ones.”
